Secondary Schools

Adolescence is a critical period for sun protection. Research highlights that harmful UV exposure during these years can significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. By prioritising sun safety in educational settings, we can help safeguard the health and wellbeing of our students.

  • Melanoma is the most common cancer in young people aged 18-39 years in Australia and the third most diagnosed cancer among all Australians.
  • Skin cancer presents the highest cost burden to the health system of any cancer type, representing $1.93 billion annually.
  • Adolescents and young adults incur the highest rates of UV radiation exposure of any age group.

By instilling the value of sun protection in secondary schools, we are not only protecting our students' immediate health but also fostering lifelong habits that can prevent serious health issues. Emphasising sun safety reflects our commitment to the holistic wellbeing of our students, ensuring they grow up with the knowledge and practices needed to lead healthy lives. This proactive approach underscores the importance of education in shaping a healthier future for all.

Benefits of sun protection in schools

Secondary schools play a crucial role in reducing future skin cancer rates by:

  • Building on positive sun protection behaviours learned in early education.
  • Protecting students when UV levels reach three or above.
  • Influencing attitudes and behaviours through education and role modelling.
  • Acknowledging UV protection as a duty of care issue.
  • Meeting WHS requirements to protect staff.

How to Implement Sun Protection Policies

  1. Educate and Role Model: Teach students about the importance of sun safety and demonstrate these behaviours.
  2. Monitor UV Levels: Ensure students are protected when UV levels are three or above.
  3. Provide Resources: Use posters, brochures, and classroom activities to reinforce sun safety messages.
  4. Policy Development: Develop and maintain a sun protection policy that aligns with WHS and duty of care requirements.

We are working on a new program for secondary schools

While we don't have a formal SunSmart program for secondary schools yet, we are happy to support you with guidance and personalised support.

By prioritising skin cancer prevention, secondary schools can protect future generations and reduce the burden of this largely preventable disease.

We are always keen to hear from schools passionate about sun safety and any innovative ideas they may have.

Stay tuned and reach out to our SunSmart team for more information or to share your ideas.

Join us in creating a sun safe environment for all students.
